Inbound vs Outbound: You Do Not Have to Choose
The debate between inbound and outbound is a false dichotomy. Here is why the best agencies run both.
There is a recurring debate in agency circles about whether inbound or outbound is the better new business strategy. Both sides are right. And the framing of the debate as a choice is the problem.
What inbound does well
Inbound generates interest from companies that are already in the market. These leads are warm by the time they arrive. They require less convincing and close at a higher rate.
The weakness of inbound is that it is slow to build. You cannot publish a case study today and generate a pipeline this month from it. Inbound requires consistent investment over a long time period.
What outbound does well
Outbound reaches companies that are not yet actively looking for a solution. It creates demand rather than capturing it. It generates conversations on a predictable timeline. A campaign launched today produces replies in four to eight weeks.
The weakness of outbound is that it requires more convincing. Reply rates are lower than inbound conversion rates. Not because outbound does not work but because the prospect is at an earlier stage of the buying journey.
Why both together is the answer
Outbound fills the top of the pipeline with conversations that would not have happened otherwise. Inbound captures the interest of prospects who are already in the market.
Together they eliminate the gaps. The pipeline is being filled from both directions simultaneously. The agencies with the most consistent revenue are almost always running both.
