Engineers Reply to Different Messages Than CEOs

Most industrial outbound campaigns use one message for every recipient. This is the single biggest reason they underperform.

In industrial B2B, outbound campaigns often target multiple decision-makers within the same organisation. The engineering director, the operations manager, the CEO. Each has a different role, different priorities, and a different perspective on the same problem.

Most campaigns send all three the same message. This is why most campaigns underperform.

What an engineer cares about

An engineering director evaluates solutions through a technical lens. They want to know whether it works, how it integrates with existing systems, and what the implementation looks like. They respond to specificity. Technical detail signals credibility.

A message that leads with commercial outcomes and ROI will not resonate with an engineering director. They are not thinking about ROI. They are thinking about whether this solution is technically sound and whether it will create problems downstream.

What a CEO cares about

A CEO evaluates solutions through a commercial and strategic lens. They want to know the impact on revenue, cost, or competitive position. They respond to clarity and brevity. A CEO does not want to read a technical specification in a cold message.

A message that leads with technical specifications will not resonate with a CEO. They want to know the business outcome in two sentences.

What an operations manager cares about

An operations manager sits between the two. They care about practical implementation, disruption to current processes, and whether the solution makes their day-to-day work easier or harder.

The fix is straightforward

Write different messages for different roles. The underlying value proposition can be the same. The framing, the language, and the proof points need to be different.

This is more work. It requires understanding what each role actually cares about and writing messaging that speaks to those specific priorities. But the difference in reply rates between a one-size-fits-all campaign and a role-segmented campaign is significant. Often two to three times higher.

The message is not the product. It is the packaging. And different buyers need different packaging.
